recovery & wellness

Sauna, ice and sensory reduction

Infrared sauna, contrast therapy, ice bath and a massage chair in its own sensory reduction room, including one of Australia's first public-use ice showers. Each session is in a private room, and you can bring someone with you.

Booking note

Wellness sessions are booked on the same system as classes, under appointments rather than the class timetable.

The infrared sauna and shower at SiSU Canberra

45 minutes, $45

Infrared Sauna

Heat only, no ice bath or shower. State-of-the-art infrared sauna sessions, for physical and psychological wellbeing.

Unlike traditional saunas that heat the air around you, infrared saunas use infrared light to warm your body directly. That means a more comfortable experience at a lower temperature, and one you can sit in for longer.

The sauna has Bluetooth built in, so connect your phone and put on a favourite podcast, an album or something slow. Having something to listen to makes it far easier to stop checking the clock and actually switch off.

Physical benefits

  • Muscle recovery and pain relief. Deep-penetrating heat can ease muscle soreness, aid recovery after exercise and relieve joint pain.
  • Cardiovascular health. Regular use has been associated with improved heart function and reduced blood pressure.

Psychological benefits

  • Stress reduction. The soothing warmth encourages relaxation and helps decrease stress.
  • Better sleep. Regular sessions may contribute to improved sleep quality, leaving you feeling more rested.

Good to know

What should I wear?

Swimwear or light activewear.

It is worth bringing something comfortable and warm to change into afterwards. Your core temperature takes a while to settle once you are out, and dry layers make the trip home much more pleasant.

Do I need to bring anything?

A water bottle is the main one. You will sweat more than you expect, so having water with you makes the session more comfortable.

Bring your phone if you would like your own music or a podcast, and nothing else. The room has its own shower, and we provide towels, shampoo, conditioner and body wash, so you can rinse off before you leave.

How long do I have in the room?

Your booking is 50 minutes in total. Our team sets the sauna for 45 minutes for you, which leaves time either side to change and get yourself sorted.

If you would like longer to enjoy the shower afterwards, just let us know and we can change the sauna setting, so your booking suits you.

The ice bath in a contrast therapy room at SiSU Canberra

45 minutes, $60

Contrast Therapy

Sauna and ice in alternating rounds. The cycle is what does the work.

The heat of the sauna promotes circulation, muscle relaxation and stress relief. The cold reduces inflammation, aids muscle recovery and activates the nervous system. Moving between the two stimulates the body's natural healing mechanisms, supporting immune function, reducing stress hormones and improving sleep quality.

Mentally, contrast therapy builds emotional regulation and stress adaptation, training the mind to tolerate discomfort. Over time it supports focus, mood stability and overall wellbeing, which makes it as useful for mental performance as for physical recovery.

Two rooms, so you can choose your cold:

  • Ice Bath & Sauna for full immersion
  • Ice Shower & Sauna if getting into a bath is a step too far. Ours is one of Australia's first public-use ice showers

Both run 45 minutes and cost the same. The room is booked for you alone, so there is no sharing the sauna and no queue for the tub. Pick the one you want when you book, and bring someone by adding an additional person.

Good to know

When do I switch between hot and cold?

When you are ready, and stay as long as you are comfortable. There is no correct number of minutes and nothing to keep up with.

If it is your first time in the cold, try lowering yourself to about waist height and holding there for a few slow breaths. That is enough to get the effect, and you can go further whenever you feel like it. Getting out early is completely fine.

The Alpha X massage chair in the sensory reduction room at SiSU Canberra

30 minutes, $30

Massage Chair

The Alpha X massage chair from Olympia, in a room we built for sensory reduction.

Zero-gravity recline, 3D body scanning and therapeutic lumbar heat make for a full massage that eases muscle tension and improves circulation, with reflexology foot rollers and a full-body airbag system on top.

The room around it matters as much as the chair. We built this one as a sensory reduction space on purpose: the light is down, the noise is out, the door is closed and nobody else is in there. Sensory reduction is a genuine tool for neurological regulation and lowering cortisol, and it works by giving your nervous system almost nothing to react to.

The result is that the chair works on your body while the room settles your mind. It is the room people book when a busy studio floor is too much, and the one they come back to after a hard week.

The chair has Bluetooth built in, so bring your own music, a meditation or a podcast and connect from your phone. With something to settle into, most people find they sink further and get more out of the session.

$30 for 30 minutes, or included in SiSU All Access at 7 sessions a week.

Good to know

What should I wear?

Whatever you are comfortable sitting in. You stay fully clothed for this one, so it works straight after a class or on the way home from work.

Do I need to bring anything?

Just your phone if you would like your own music, a meditation or a podcast. The chair has Bluetooth built in.

$80 for both

The Perfect Pair

Contrast therapy, then straight into the massage chair.

Contrast therapy is doing real work on your circulation, your muscles and your nervous system, and that work carries on well after you step out of the room. What it needs next is stillness.

Walk straight into the sensory reduction room from there, drop into the massage chair with the lights low, and give your body the time to take it all in. The massage eases whatever is still holding on, and the quiet lets the hot and cold finish what it started. Most people leave looser, calmer and clearer than either session delivers on its own.

Contrast therapy 45 minutes, the massage chair 30 minutes. $80 for the pair, which is $10 less than booking them separately, and both are included in SiSU All Access.

Booked over the phone or at reception, so we can line the two rooms up back to back at a time that suits you.

$139 for two people

The Terrific Trio

Three sessions, two people, one very good visit.

A carefully curated wellness experience to share. Bring a friend, your sister, your mum, your partner. Any time, any day.

What the two of you get, for $139:

  • A class. Reformer Pilates or yoga
  • Contrast therapy. Infrared sauna, plus the ice bath or ice shower
  • The massage chair, in the sensory reduction room

Booked over the phone or at reception, so we can put all three sessions together at a time that suits you both.

Recovery every week, not just when you remember

The people who get the most out of sauna and cold therapy are the ones doing it regularly rather than occasionally. SiSU All Access includes 5 sauna and 5 contrast therapy sessions a week, alongside every class on the timetable, for $79 a week.
